I wanted to make art for animals. In order to make art for animals, I needed to know what kind of art animals would like. In order to know what kind of art animals would like, I needed to understand what it’s like to be an animal–what it’s like to see and hear and think and feel and behave like an animal. Thus, a series called Sketches for Art for Animals.
This project is intended to help understand what it is like to mark one’s territory like an animal.

Animals mark their territory in various ways. I wanted to find a way to mark my own territory after I bought a new house in a new city. I decided to photograph the sidewalk all the way around my block, which can be seen as a one-inch-wide strip in this eight-foot-long print, providing a minute record of the limits of my territory. A magnifying glass was provided for the viewer.
